TMglobe.gifRoyal Spanish Mint - 2009 Coins

The Royal Spanish Mint had a great 2008 with a stunning design for the European Football Championships gold and silver proof issues, a continuing series of gold and silver proofs for Great Spanish Painters and some very interesting coins in silver and gold honoring Ancient coinage.

Spain 200 Euro.jpgIn 2009 Jose Miguel Fernandez de Liencres, General Mangaer of the Sales Department, told the Media Forum to expect both gold and silver proof Phillip II coins from the Europa series in 200 and 10 Euro denominations. At the Mints website theses two coins are equated in the following way; the 10 Euro is considered an 8 Reales, while the 200 Euro is designated a 4 Escudos. The coins are denominated in Euros, but listed in this traditional Spanish way and I like that approach, especially since the Europa Numismatic efforts and particularly this Spainsh European Heritage series in it's sixth year of issues, is designed in honor of the past.

Spain will commemorate the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer tournement in South Africa with a silver 10 Euro and a gold 100 Euro in 2009. This will be the first time the FIFA competition will be held on the African continent in it's 19 years of existance and the fifth time the Royal Spanish Mint will be producing

Spain 10 Euro.jpg

 coins for the event.

Later this year a very modern design for the 10th Anniversary of the Euro coinage system in a 12 Euro denomination will be produced, plus more coins in the Numismatic Treasures and Spanish Painters series. The second series Spanish Painters coin will commemorate Salvador Dali and the Numismatic Treasures second series will continue honoring past Spanish coin design heritage.

Vatican Numismatic Office - 2009 Coins

toms162-web2.gifThe Vatican Numismatic Office announced just a few new issues with a number of interesting themes. There will be 100 Euro gold coins for Adam and Eve cast out of Eden and The Sistine Chapel. The Masterpieces of Sculpture in Vatican City series continues with 20 and 50 Euro gold issues featuring the Good Shepard and the Laocoon.

The International year of Astronomy will be honored on a bimetallic 2 Euro circulation issue and the normal circulation type sets in BU and Proof will be released for collectors. The proof set includes a silver medal for the Evantoms164-web.jpggelist Saint John.

Silver commemoratives will also be struck in 5 and 10 Euro denominations celebrating the 42nd World Day of Peace and the 80th Anniversary of the Vatican City State established in 1929, respectively.

But the main message to the group gathered at the Media Forum however, was that the Vatican Numismatic Office has no agents. They are the sole distributors of their own coinage. This statement was made necessary because of the proliferation of counterfeit Vatican Euro coins sets being sold worldwide, particularly on the Internet and on Internet based sales and auction websites.

toms163-web.jpg

While I can understand the problems this causes the Vatican Numismatic Offiice and sympathize with their troubles regarding private packaging, I must say that thier restrictive issuing policy and their lack of use of wider more sophisticated distribution agents certainly seems to be at the crux of this problem. After searching a few Official Vatican website pages, I can tell you that 2009 dated Vatican coins are on sale now in the Month of April, but several restrictions apply, which you can read about at the Vatican City State Services page for Philatelics and Numismatics.

Outlines for the full 2009 Vatican Numismatic program can also be found within the site. Click the highlighted sections on any of my postings to link to more information.

Royal Australian Mint - 2009 Coins

Looking forward to 2010, Graham Smith Chief Executive Officer of aust polar.jpgthe Royal Australian Mint is hoping for a great turnout when the RAM hosts the Annual Mint Directors Conference in Canberra. Smith shared a bit of RAM history with the crowd before handing off to Felicity Mullens, Director of Markteing and Sales, who did a quick wrap-up of 2008 and shared some of the RAM 2009 programs with us.

aust dinkum.jpgTheir Little Dinkums series continues with a new pair of gold proofs for Petey Platypus and Lillypilly Lizard, plus a brand new Mama Roo $1 coin will be released in 2009 featuring a mother kangaroo with four young followers. Theaust bill artist.jpg new Blinky Bill coin series also begins in 2009, with a proof set and a special Baby set, both of which include coins with Blinky Bill's originator, Dorothy Wall. A gold and a $1 silver type will be struck to celebrate 60 Years of Australian Citizenship. This design brings together the great melting pot of Aussie culture in aust astr.jpga circular propeller like array. It’s a good-looking coin and one that should garner attention from their collector base and beyond.

For the International Year of Astronomy, the RAM has produced a pair of coins with simple, yet fun designs showing the famous parks Telescope in a basic brass $1 type and a more intricate copper nickel 20 cent coin, both in proof and unciraulted aust ox.jpgsets, plus six coin proof and unc sets with the circulation denominations included.

aust done.jpgAlso new for 2009 are a $1 Year of the Ox coin, $10 gold and $1 silver and gold plated Kangaroo coins designed by artist Ken Done, a 20 cent commemorative for Australian Service Nurses and a pair of new silver $5 issues for the International Polar Year.

Royal Dutch Mint - 2009 Coins

rdm both.jpg

As J. Rene van Dijk Commercial Director for the Royal Dutch Mint emphasized, they do few commemoratives each year, but they do them very well. This year the Royal Dutch Mint has hit on a subject of great interest to several pockets of the coin market. The 400 Years of the Dutch VOC Company Manhattan commemoratives show an ariel view of the island then and now on obverse and reverse. It’s a design you can’t help but admire and most who view it, will want to own this either it’s 5 Euro proof silver, 5 Euro silver plated or 10 Euro proof gold version.

The history depicted on these coins involves a European countries search for a passage to the Far East, a classic exploration company, a commander of great renoun and an island destined to become a central depot between an old and a new world. The Manhattan coins honor all these elements and by doing so, garner cross interest from several collecting areas. So if you are interested in The Netherlands explorations of 1609, the Dutch East India Company, Henry Hudson, the ship - Half Moon, New York City or Mahnattan, then keep an eye out in April for the release of the 5 Euro proof silver commemorative coin celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the Dutch in Manhattan.

The second type the Royal Dutch Mint will issue in 2009 commemorates 400 Years of Trade between Netherlands and Japan and is being struck in a joint aruba carnaval.jpgeffort with the Japan Mint. The design is not yet complete, but given this mints track record, we can expect something great.

The Royal Dutch Mint will be continuing their Ducat series in 2009 with gold one and two ducat issues. Also planned for the mint is a special 2009 Benelux coin set containing coins from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg with special packaging. This is all in addition to the mints other annual BU set offerings.

Netherlands Antillies and Aruba BU sets with 2009 dates will be issued from the Royal Dutch Mint this year, plus a special 10 Florin proof gold coin will be struck commemorating the 55th Carnaval on Aruba.

Aside from the Dutch Royal Mint website, most all Dutch Royal Mint coins are available from The Coin & Currency Institute, Inc., P.O. Box 1057, Clifton, NJ 07014, email - mail@coin-currency.com and tell them you heard about it while reading Big Ideas, little world!
