Coin Identification, Coin Location - Made Easier
Posted by Tom

TMWhat.gifTMWhere.gifComing Soon...Keep Watching This Space

It's been about a year and half now since I started posting to Big Ideas, little world. Check the left side bar and you'll see a vast number of archived postings, all of which people are still finding through the web on a daily basis. It's really been a lot of fun, having a direct outlet to bring you news of the world of numismatics and I have been pleasantly surprised time and again by the number of readers that find my comments entertaining and enlightening. Honestly, I am happy anyone has found them at all.

But seriously, the time has come to expand our perspectives a bit and to that end I asked my best designing buddy, Sara Wait, to come up with a couple new logos for two fresh catagories for Big Ideas, little world. You can see her work at the top left and right of this posting and with any luck you can see my work soon in future postings to these two new catagories.

What is it? will provide an outlet for readers to send me an image of a coin they are having trouble identifying, along with a brief rundown of what they have done up to the frustration point in way of trying to catalog their item. In other words, don't send me your easy ones, work at it a while and if you get completely stuck, drop me a line. Remember, I will need a clear image, preferably a jpg scan in color at 300%, so I can see it well, and a clear description of your trials in trying to identify the coin. Sending in your image and information constitutes granting your permission for me to use that image and information in a posting on Big Ideas, little world and for updating our NumisMaster website and various Standard Catalogs. I help you, you help me. It's only fair.

Where to Find it will be a feature catagory for Big Ideas, little world, in which I will give readers some direction for good paths to coin collecting. I've been at this for a while, almost 22 years now as numsimatic market analyst of the Standard catalog of World Coins series, and over the years I have learned where to go for specific items. In Where to Find it postings I will give readers the guidance of my experience in the coin collecting hobby, as well as some of the new things I am still discovering on a daily basis. I'm hoping it will be a fun way for me to share what I've learned.

So look for these two new features to beging appearing here soon and let me know if you are enjoying this expansion of topics!

The Bank Job
Posted by Tom

TMfilm.gifTom's Recommended Film of the Week

The Bank Job

Jason Statham films are usually a fun hour and a half, lots of action, plenty of guns and cars blazing around, maybe a good plot twist or two. Normally I enjoy the films he stars in, but then forget them a day after viewing. The Bank Job takes a large step up from that.

Don't get too excited, The Bank Job is no Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch, but then again it doesn't have Guy Ritchie writing and directing.

Never-the-less The Bank Job offers a good story line, actually based on a true story, which may have helped. There are strong performances with a bit more depth, more charcater developement and a more developed plot. Weeks after watching The Bank Job for the first time, I wanted to watch it again and did this week.

It's fun, fast paced, offers a nice combination of action and plot, plus some interesting twists and turns. Give this unusual Statham heist film a try this weekend and see what you think.

Presidential Dollar Coins
Posted by Tom

TM-NEWS.gifPresidential Dollars - Of The Future?

Have you been collecting Presidential Dollars yet? I have been saving them as I come across them in circulation. My wife even got me a pair of Presidential Dollar boards to save them in and just this week a packaging company - Armored Brand USA - sent me a sample of a super bookcase style binder designed for collecting Presidential Dollars.

Jacksonf.jpgRecently the Andrew Jackson Dollar was released and his wild haired presence on a circulating coin is what poped into my head when I came to the end of my next presidential adventure, related below. Keep reading, and don't worry, I won't cross political views with coin collecting too seriously!

The other evening I made a choice to watch the Discovery Channel with my sons and DVR the Presidential candidates debate for later viewing. One of the many commercial interuptions we sat through while watching our shows was a political campaign endorsement for one Bob Barr and my youngest son asked who this fellow was, as he had not previously seen his ads.

My youngest son has been watching and discussing the debates with classmates at school this election year and so the prospect of a new candidate, this Bob Barr fellow, both interested and agitated him. In way of explaination, I sought out a website that offered pictures of and links to all known 2008 Presidential candidates who appear on one or more Jacksonb.jpgState ballots. There's quite a number of them, and several websites designed to introduce us to them. Take a look for yourself at: Vote Smart or Politics 1 or Wikipedia.

After looking through a number of pages and seeing so many hopeful future presidential faces, I began to wonder, who in all this crowd might one day find their likeness on a Presidental Dollar? Do any of them look like good Presidential Dollar material to you?

Commodities Continue Tumbling
Posted by Tom

TM-NEWS.gifMetals On The Slide

This week has been tough on commodities with Gold and the other precious metals we coin collectors follow regularly not beening spared this time around. Gold hit a one month low just below $800 an ounce, with silver below $10, and nearing $9.50. Platinum down is dramatically to about $875, with Palladium crashing well below $200 down to about $170 this morning.

Crude oil has dropped mercifully just below $70 a barrel, giving consumers a big break at the gas pump and the U.S. dollar has solidified with some nice gains against most other major world currencies.

Most silver and gold commemorative coins will remain high in the coin market for a while however, as they react more slowly to a decline than they do to rising spot prices. Platinum and Palladium coins generally hold less demand in the collector market, making them react more quickly to both the rise and fall of spot metals prices.

Persepolis

TMfilm.gifTom's Recommended Film of the Week

Persepolis

Marjane Satrapi does a wonderful job of translating her excellent graphic novel into an outstanding animated film. Satrapi spent her youth in Iran during the cultural Revolution and the over-throwing of the Shah, invasion by Iraq, higher schooling in France and eventual return to her homeland. Satrapi's inquisitive nature coupled with a childs tendency to look towards their parents and older relatives for direction, give this film a base that rings very true through all countries, cultures and time periods.

Political, culture, class, gender and religious factors weighed heavily on Satrapi and her approaches to these changing factors ruling her life are what give Persepolis it's wide breadth and deep perspective. Just about everyone will find something to relate to in this touchingly beautiful animated film.

20th & 21st Century SCWC Printout Mailings
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifContibutor Printouts Hit the Postal System

Even though I am still involved in the last weeks of final production on the soon-to-be-sent-to-the-printer 4th edition 17th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins, the last couple of weeks I have been working on the start of next years 20th and 21st Century SCWC.

When preparing for a new edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins the first thing we do is determine what printouts will be needed for our contributors. I do this with the help of our contributor data files, so if you are a contributor and you have not contacted me with any changes of address or interest, we will be sending you pretty much the same countries to update as you got last year. Once I have a list ready, our database specialist, Deb McCue starts running the needed country files. Once they are all complete, Deb prints out multiple copies of each needed country. That takes a plenty of time and a lot of paper. Deb used up several cases of printer paper this year!

While Deb is doing that, I write a cover letter, laying out the deadlines and instructions. I order envelopes, get labels run and get the letter printed.

After the printouts are run and filed alphabetically we set out pulling what each contributor needs, stuffing envelopes, labeling and sending them out. That's what I have been doing this last week.

While I have been working on the 20th and 21st Century Coin Catalog mailing, George Cuhaj has been working on a Modern Paper Money mailing. This year these books are running close together, so if you are a contributor on both, please set aside a little extra time this fall to concentrate on your suggested improvements, changes and price updates.

While most of the updating work done on our catalogs is still completed by hand, a few contributors have been sending in their updates electronically, using NumisMaster or in a few cases, a DVD of the book. I like the immediacy of these electronic contributions. I also like the way they save trees!

If you have an area of world coin specialty and would like to participate in your hobby by keeping the KP catalogs up to date, please drop me a line at tom.michael@fwpubs.com I am always happy to hear from folks who want to share their expertise in numismtics!

State of Play
Posted by Tom

TMfilm.gifTom's Recommended Film of the Week

State of Play

Even though I do watch a lot of films, I do not have the budget to buy large numbers of DVD's. My method? I use our local library lending system. It's free and they have a great selection of both new and classic titles. Patience is a plus though, as others have discovered the public library gold mine as well and I often have to wait weeks or even months to get a popular film.

Our library system has a very nice search engine, which I often use to discover interesting films. Another way I locate potential DVD's for viewing is by always viewing the trailers on each DVD I watch. You can often find unusual, off-beat films in the trailer section of a film you enjoyed, give it atry and let me know how it works for you.

That trailer watching system is how I discovered State of Play, this weeks recommendation. When I watched the trailer, it looked good, so I located the DVD in my public library system and placed it on hold. A month or so later the DVD arrived and last Sunday I opened it up to watch. It was only then that I discovered that what I had was not a two hour film, but a six hour series! State of Play turned out to be a 350 minute, six part BBC series, so I watched three hours, then a football game, another three hours and the another football game and though I do like football, I must admit, State of Play was better.

The script by Paul Abbott was good, the acting outstanding and production qualtiy and direction by David Yates was just what you would expect from the BBC.

I have heard that a film company in the U.S. is working on a movie version of the miniseries, but it is hard to see how the BBC series could be bettered. The cast listing for the movie is stellar though, with Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams among others.

The six parter I watched also had a basket full of excellent screen performers such as James McAvoy, John Simm, Kelly Macdonald, Polly Walker, David Morrissey and Bill Nighy.

State of Play gives you a combination of murder mystery, political thriller and investigative detective work all in a journalism package. Hard to ask for more than that, but do leave yourself enough time. At 350 minutes it might be best to spread it out over more than the one day I squeezed it into!
