Back in Action
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifWell, it looks like Big Ideas, little world will be back in action. The folks at F+W-KP have asked that I resume posting once a week.

Since time is extremely tight around here now with all our book projects, I think I'll focus my postings on what's happening in the realm of the Standard Catalog of World Coins. So keep an eye on out for KP Updates here on a weekly basis.

The last few months I have been deeply immersed in gathering data on values and images of coins for our upcoming Standard Catalog of German Coins. This will be the third edition of this seminal work and may be the last time we produce this book. You'll see some big additions in the listings for this catalog, including expanded listing in several areas and full listings back to 1501 for all German issues.

Some of the individual states are finished and are being offered as digital downloads from our www.shopnumismaster.com site.

Well, that's it for now, please let me know if you are anxious for me to resume any particular features of Big Ideas, little world. Time is limited, but if you liked my book reviews, film recommendations, auction info or news features, give a yell and I'll see what I can do in the way of regular rotation.

Two Standard Catalogs Down -Now on to German
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifGold Book & 19th Century Done, Now for the German Coins

It has been one really hectic period the past six months since the last 20th and 21st Century Standard Catalogs of World Coins were completed. Those two books have been out in the market for a while now and we have been busy creating revised and updated editions of two more books - the Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins 6th edition and the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900 6th edition.

It is interesting to note that in the four years since the 5th edition of the Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins was edited and updated, spot gold prices have advanced from about $410 to around $1050 today. You can do the math, that's about two and a half times higher. Needless to say, I'd recommend purchasing a new edition to harvest the benefits of the long months of time, effort and knowledge invested in this new edition by our contributors and staff.

Z3655.jpgThe same can be said of the new 1801-1900 Standard Catalog of World Coins. Much of the contributor input was added to the database during the spring and summer months, but the final updating to values that I did this fall brought out some very significant increases over a large portion of the country listings. The past edition was completed in 2006, when spot gold was at $650 an ounce and spot silver topped at $12.50 an ounce. Today of course, gold is near $1050 and silver is hovering around $17.50. These spot prices led to higher melt values for the low end grades of hundreds of types, but the most significant changes we made for this new 6th edition came in relation to high collector demand and limited supplies in the higher grades of popular types throughout the country listings. The book won't be out until later this fall, but you can see most of the price changes on our NumisMaster website right now for a moderate subscription fee. Take a look at www.NumisMaster.com

With these two big projects complete, I have moved on to another special project that will fill much of my time for the next twelve months. A 3rd edition of the Standard Catalog of German Coins has been scheduled for fall 2010 release. Doug Nicol has completed German coin listings back into the 1500's and Merna and Merry Dudley have been entering Doug's write-ups exclusively for the last few months. Many states have complete listings for their time periods of existance and now the work begins on adding values and images to those listings. Several states have been selected for digital download release during the early months of 2010 and those are the ones I am tackling first. We want people to see how the work has progressed and listings expanded from the 2nd edition. The digital dowloads should provide this, but of course, you can always log onto www.NumisMaster.com to see the latest in our listings for any country, including the extensive run of German States.

Contributors are also stepping up to help in polishing the German States listings. The first twelve States selected for digital downloads have been send out to contributors for their input and suggestions. Many of these experts will be helping with adding values and images to the listings, but if you feel that you too could make a contribution to this project, please contact me by commenting on this posting, commenting on specific coins on www.NumisMaster.com or emailing me directly.

Gold Catalog in Progress
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifSwamped in Gold

Having returned from a short family vacation in South Dakota where we visited the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, a Minuteman Missle silo, Custer State Park and Wall Drug, plus drove the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road - I am now back to working on a 6th edition of the Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins. A little over half of the price changes have been made already. These can be seen on our No Am 2010.jpgNumisMaster website. The rest should be entered over the next few weeks, so by mid-fall all gold coinage in NumisMaster will have been revised and the new book should be on sale before Christmas.

At the same time we are working on a 6th edition for the Standard Catalog of World Coins 19th Century. Most of the price changes have already been entered for this book and are currently available on NumisMaster. The books will be printed later this fall and should also be on sale in time for the Holidays.

New on the market right now is the 19th edition 2010 North American Coins & Prices, which covers the United States, Canada and Mexico. Get your copy at www.shopnumismaster.com

TMkplogo.gifTraveling Can Be Troubling

Due to high winds in Paris, our original flight was canceled and Lisa Bellavin worked to get us rebooked on a slightly later flight out of Berlin to JFK in New York. We made the that trip fine, with a few hitches, such as having difficulty finding a cab big enough to hold all of us (we only had enough Euro cash left for one cab) and finding that all the books and brochures we were returning with drove one of our bags (mine of course) well over the weight limit. But we persevered and arrived at JFK on time, with a long layover ahead of us before a second flight to Cincinnati.

While making our way through customs, we were amazed to see a couple celebrities making their way back to the states from the Berlin Film Festival. Woody Harrelson stood right by us asking a customs worker for a pen and a customs declaration sheet, as he had fogotten his. He looked a bit tired from the trip, but Steve Buscemi, who strode past us at a quick pace looked well rested and ready to get moving. The woman behind me in line said she loved his acting, so I recommended she try some of the directorial work. She said she did not know he had directed anything and asked for some titles, so I mentioned Trees Lounge as a good starting point, as well as some of the Sopranos episodes, like the classic Pine Barrens.

We filled the time by calling work and family, reading, watching the news and eating dinner. After heading over to our gate and waiting a while, Lisa and Scott Tappa played a little trick on me and made me think our flight was canceled. They were trying to get a rise out of me and sure enough they did. Once they let me in on the joke and we all had a good laugh before boarding the plane.

This short flight was uneventful, with most of us sleeping our way to Hebron, Kentucky, home to the Cincinnati Airport. We loaded our substantial luggage onto a shuttle bus and headed over to the Comfort Suites for the night. I think we all slept pretty good, knowing we were back in the U.S.A. and would be back to our homes in just one more day, with any luck.

Tomorrow we will catch a flight back to Appleton, Wisconsin, followed by a moderate drive home. Then it's back to work finishing up the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 and the Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date.

Let's Write A Newspaper!

TMkplogo.gifWorld Coins News Written Remotely From Berlin

Our little crew of four stayed in Berlin an extra day after the World Money Fair was finished so that we could write this months World Coin News. The idea was to do it here while it was fresh in our minds, so we could get the news out to our readers quicker and with the utmost accuracey.

It was difficult, but we accomplished the task with the help of Maggie Stigsell and Debbie Bradley back in Iola. Here in Berlin, Lisa Bellavin and Scott Tappa took care of image selection and transfer, plus Scott wrote an article, while Dave Harper wrote and edited all the copy and I wrote and emailed copy. Everyone worked diligently on both sides of the pond and together I think we must have put out a really fine issue.

Afterwards, we discovered that our flight back home had been canceled, so Lisa has been busy rebooking our flights and getting us home by an alternate route. We'll be a day later and a bit more tired I suspect, but we'll get there.

Sunday - Last of the World Money Fair for 2009
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifFinal Day at Berlin Wolrd Money Fair 2009

It's Sunday and at an average U.S. coin show that would mean little business, lots of early departures, a bit of dealer to dealer business and quiet times. At the World Money Fair, this is not the case at all. The Fair was, perhaps even a bit busier today that it was on Saturday. Lots of people shopping, plenty of money changing hands and still plenty of Mint officials to visit with.

The MDM booth offered a show special of all five German Mint commemorative Saarland 2 Euros for 10 Euro - face value. Packaged Mint sets for the most recent EU country - Slovakia was selling at rapid pace. The Royal Canadian Mint had folks striking up their own special World Money Fair medals with a pair of dies and a hammer. I struck two so I could bring one back to Iola for friend and fellow blogger George Cuhaj.

Yes, the day was hopping and business seemed good. It was a real pleasure to see that on a Sunday at a coin show.

Another Busy Day in Berlin

TMkplogo.gif2nd COTY Awards Ceremoney at the World Money Fair

Saturday was another busy day for all of us here in Berlin at the World Money Fair. Our Coin of the Year awards ceremoney went very well, with a larger and more diverse crowd than last year.

Edmund Moy, Direct of the U.S. Mint was pleased to accept three awards. Belarus took two awards and Mongolia won the big prize of overall coin of the year.

Full details will be available within a day or so on the NumisMaster website, the Numismatic News website and the World Coin News website, all linked here by clkicking on the blue or red text.

One exciting aspect of conversation at this years awards ceremony involved discussions about new President Barack Obama. Everone in Europe is happy with our choice of President Obama and all are looking toward him as a way to a better future for world relations and better economic times.

First Day of Public at World Money Fair
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifWorld Money Fair - Opens To Public!

Good morning from Berlin. After a good nights sleep, I am ready for the first big day of the World Money Fair. Today the show opens to the public and as I recall last years event, everything ramps up in pace from this point on.

Speaking of pace, yesterday I took a few pictures of the set-up processes for the World Money Fair, which I’d like to share with you here.

The number of people working to bring this combination trade show and dealer bourse together is phenomenal. As you walk through the bourse in these early set-up days, you must be careful, as there are workmen moving quickly in every Berlin 2 105.jpgdirection, all with a set purpose and destination. Materials are everywhere and show organizers are here and there doing everything and anything to fulfill exhibitor’s needs.

While dealer booths are quite standard, the Mint and technical booths range in variety from functional to extremely lavish. The MDM booth is always a treat, with large displays and eye catching color. The Perth Mint booth is both dignified and thrilling in its displays of new coinage series, which are to be announced today. The Austrian Mint booth sports a unique design and a display of some 28 rolls of Berlin 2 118.jpggold one ounce Royal Philharmonic bullion coins, which required two guards at all times.

Later this evening, I will attempt to describe the Media Forum, which entails four hours of Mint presentations laying out their new issue programmes for the coming year. For now, I must get moving, however, as our first meeting of the day, with our friends at the Italian State Mint begins in about one hour.

World Money Fair - Media Forum
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifMedia Forum - The Big Day

This years Media Forum in Berlin at the World Money Fair was tightened up slightly with only 18 slots for world mints to speak about their coin programs. Even with the reduced number the Forum went for about about 3 1/2 hours.

I took extensive notes on my laptop, while the battery held out, but by after about 2 hours it was running low and I switched over to hand written notes. Taking pictures and notes is hard for me, so I had some help for part of the time this year from my associates Lisa Bellavin, Dave Harper and Scott Tappa, but they had other meetings scheduled, so by the end I was on my own again, like last year.

Time is tight this morning, but I will run for you here what I thought were the most interesting announcements or comments, one from each of the mints presenting at the Forum:

Canada - coins are to be released in March for the 1909-2009 Cenntenial of the Montreal Canadains Hockey Team

South Africa - The White Rhino is to be featured on the Natura gold coins this year and the Protea series will offer stunning 1 Rand silver and 25 Rand gold coins honoring the National Anthem

German Mints - Saarland 2 Euro issue - released at show to great crowds

French - the Monnaie de Paris set a goal of uplifting world spirits in the face of economic crisis and plans coins with themes of - First step on the moon, Madame Currie, European court of Human Rights and Fall of the Berlin Wall

Poland - Mint of Poland has a massive program planned, for several countries, including coins with themes of Extreme Sports, Lunar Calendar Ox, Fairy Tales and some interesting coins for Poland on the 450th Anniversary of thier Postal System and 400th Anniversary of Polish Settlement in America

Portugal - Their European Cultural series will center on language and literature featuring Luis de Camoes and Fernando Pessoa

Berlin 3 048.jpgNordic Mints - will focus their issues on the anniversary of the 1809 seperation of Finland from Sweden, in issues from both countries

Austria - will offer a coin commemorating the Tyrolean Resistance Fighters and bring thier Railway series to an end with an electric train issue and a very modern train coin

Switzerland - The Swiss Mint will fetaure the Red Deer in the National Parks series this year

Netherlands - with only a few new commemoratives each you Netherlands must choose wisely and work hard - this year they have a super idea with 400 years Dutch VOC Manhattan coin - which features arial views of Manhattan then and now - I love this design!

Australia - The Royal Australian Mint will give us a new Mam Roos $1 coin, a wonderful set featuring the Parks Telescope and an Australian Berlin 3 067.jpgCitizenship set emphasizing the melting pot of aussie imigration

Italy - will be doing a Marconi set, Tour de Italy bike race coin and a great 300th Herculaneum coin, plus a 50 Euro for the ongoing construction of the Barcelona Church - which my wife and son visited while in Barcelona a few years ago

Vatican - Expressed their concern over imitations of thier coin sets and made it clear that they are the sole distributors of their issues, which for 2009 will include a 5 Euro World Peace coin

Berlin 3 125.jpgSpain - will have 10th anniversary of the Euro system coin denominated 12 Euro

Royal Mint - will be hosting the 2012 Olympics in London and has a massive plan layed out for issues each year leading up to the event - most interesting among them is the Olympic Countdown coin series - fetauring a clock in movement with each issue, with a sport featured on each coin as well

Japan - will continue their 47 Prefecture Program with some very Berlin 3 143.jpgstunning designs and excellent use of color - but thier big news is that a coin honoring the Emperor will be coming in 2009 - a groundbreaking event indeed

Latvia - has planned coins honoring their tradition of Basketball, Chimney Sweeps, University of Latvia and Motherhood

China - will offeran Outlaws of the Marsh literary set, a World Expo 2010 in Shanghai coin and a coin honoring the 60th Anniversary of the People Republic

And that's just a very quick sampling of the Media Forum for 2009. For more news on Media Forum announcements, keep an eye on Big Ideas, little world and World Coin News where a large feature article should be running within the next two months.

We Visit With the Kazakhstan Mint
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifKazakhstan Mint at World Money Fair in Berlin

We have been in Berlin for three days and the World Money Fair is really gearing up for business. Many Mint officials from around the world are here at the Estrel Hotel conducting the business of new issues coins at the highest level.

A number of Mint Directors, Sales, Export and Marketing Managers have scheduled meeting times with our Krause Publications group. This morning we spent time talking with the Director of the Kazakhstan Mint - Farit Tuganbayev and Aizhan Zhanuzakova of the Sales Department.

Berlin 2 097.jpg

Scott Tappa, Publisher for KP Numismatics had some financial business to wrap up with the Director, then we moved on to discussions of future plans.

The Kazakhstan coinage program covers both circulating coins and a wide variety of commoratives from copper-nickel to silver, to gold. A number of new coins will make their way into the next edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date with the information that Director Tuganbayev will supply.

Of special interest to collectors of Kazakhstan coins here in the United States; Director Tuganbayev explained that many precious metal issues of the Mint are only distributed to the home market and so, may not have been seen outside of Kazakhstan very often.

Keep and eye on NumisMaster and the Standard Catalog of Wolrd Coins 2001-Date for updates in this area.

Perth Mint - Gold Specialists
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifThe Perth Mint - GoldCorp Austalia

After walking Berlin for a day and getting aqcuainted with our surroundings we began our meetings with a closed session with our friends at The Perth Mint.

In The Perth Mints private meeting room we were excited to find an extensive display of their coin products, both for Australia and other nations, which spanned a very large conference table. About half of the coins displayed can be seen in this photograph. Berlin 2 085.jpgThe remaining issues could not be reproudced here, as they are under wraps until formal announcement and day of issue arrive. On Friday, I will share with you news of these new coins, which I found quite fascinating.

The Perth Mint has been a frontrunner in developing new technologies and broaching new frontiers in modern issue coins for some time now. Their Australian Antarctic Territories series offers some of the most attractive use of color I have noted. It enhances the charcater of the coins very attractive designs in a way that many other colorized coins have not achieved. Check them out at the Perth mint website, www.perthmint.com.au

Other coin series from the Perth Mint which you might want to explore include a stunning Tuvalu Pirate series and a Tuvalu Motorcycle series, both in color.

Our meeting was both informative and exciting and I hope that our realtionship with The Perth Mint will grow. It is a certainty that listings for Perth Mint issued coins will grow in the upcoming new edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date.

World Money Fair Gets Rolling
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifPerth Mint and the Berlin Munzkabinett

One great night sleep later and I’m ready to begin again! I must say, the World Money Fair picked a nice hotel in the Estrel. Each and every guest request I have made has been taken care of quickly and efficiently to my full satisfaction. My room temp this year is perfect and I even have a view of the Beergarten in front of the hotel, though it is unfortunately closed for the season.

This morning we have plans to meet with our friends at the Perth Mint. In the afternoon we will take a train into the downtown area again for a visit to the Berlin Munzkabinett, whose new online catalogue is really amazing - click on the museum name to view the online catalogue. In between, we will try to locate our booth materials for the show and get things moving on that front, as booth set up begins tomorrow at 3:00 pm.

Because the World Money Fair is a unique hybrid combination of trade show and traditional coin dealer bourse, to enjoy a successful visit one must pick and choose what is to be accomplished. Our little band of four has an advantage in numbers, but the schedule we have created will still prove challenging. At this point we have meetings scheduled with 22 world mints and distributors, one museum visit, the Media Forum, a few receptions and of course the Coin of the Year presentations.

The fact that all this can be accomplished at one show is what makes the World Money Fair such a fantastic venue!

Tonight I’ll try to post again and let you know how the day went. For those of you reading this in the United States, remember, the time in Berlin is seven hours ahead of CST in America. With any luck, I should be able to post twice a day to keep you informed. Pictures and links may have to be added after the initial posting, so you may want to stop by Big Ideas, little world several times a day to see and read all the available news.

We Arrive in Berlin and Hit the Ground Running
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifGetting Acquainted with the City

Hi, and happy Tuesday night from Berlin, Germany! Our adventurous band of four, Scott Tappa, Lisa Bellavin, David Harper and I have arrived safely at the Estrel Hotel where the World Money Fair is gearing up and preparing for public opening later in the week.

Out travels went smoothly, except for some serious and extensive turbulence between Detroit and New York. The flight across the northern Atlantic was a breeze and we all got much more rest that we did during last years flight.

DSC03252.JPGAfter settling in at the hotel, getting freshened up and reassembling in the lobby, the four of us toured around town on foot and by elevated Metro Train. I dawdled continually and almost lost my travel mates at a few points. Their constant comment was, “Where’s Tom?” I think they had had enough of my lagging when we came across Humboldt University and there was an open air book market. I spent too much time looking through the books, as usual, and didn’t catch up with them for several blocks.

A few of the sites we visited with numismatic ties include, the Soviet War Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, Humboldt University and the Radio Tower. tower.JPGAll of these places tie in to personalities, statuary, or structures featured on coins.

Let’s have some fun. The first person to comment on this posting and correctly name four coins, with Country and KM number, which tie directly to those four places wins a one year subscription to NumisMaster, compliments of Big Ideas, little world, NumisMaster and the Standard Catalog of World Coins. The last person to name four correctly, before 8:00 am CST on Wednesday February 11th gets the consolation prize, a current 3rd edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date.

20th Century SCWC Ready for 37th Edition
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifStandard Catalog of Wolrd Coins 37th edition

After months of work from hundreds of contributors and staff we are finally nearing the end of our updating of the 1901-200Z2950.jpg0 Standard Catalog of World Coins listings. The book will be completely in the hands of our designer Sandi Morrison, within a few weeks and should be sent to the printer by the end of March. Copies of the new 37th edition should be available in the market by June 2009. When I have a review copy in hand, I'll post the news! In the meantime however, I can show you this sneak-peak of the cover design, which sports a color I don't recall having ever seen on an SCWC series book before now.

1562_1773_large.jpgOn another subject entirely, if you are looking for bargains you may want to take a look at all the new DVD's KP has produced. There are currently about 9 titles available for purchase. You won't find these on the KP Books website, as they are only being offered through our Numismatic News website on the F+W Magazine Store at present. Prices are pretty good on the DVDs, for instance, the 1601-1700 Standard Catalog of World Coins DVD retails for $44.99 and is currently on sale for $34.99. The printed book for 1601-1700 SCWC, which is large and heavy, carries a suggested retail of $80.00, so the DVD offers a substantial savings, if you have a DVD drive and can work off your laptop or desktop PC or Mac. The same is true of the 1901-2000 Standard Catalog of World Coins 37th editon DVD, which retails for $44.99, but currently on sale for $34.99. The printed copy of the SCWC 37th carries a suggested retail price of $60.00, so a cheaper DVD is a good option if you like working on a computer screen.

Other current sales include; the 1801-1900 SCWC DVD for $34.99 and the 2009 U.S. Coin Digest DVD for only $9.99.

Click on the highlighted links in the text to view the websites and other interesting stuff.

Three Weeks to World Money Fair
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifVisiting the World Money Fair in Berlin

New calendar year, fresh start to a new numismatic season! So where will I begin? At the World Money Fair in Berlin!

I'll be attending the World Money Fair in Berlin again this year, with my co-workers; Dave Harper - Editor of Numismatic News and Coin of the Year Director, Lisa Bellavin - Online editor and COTY coordinator and Scott Tappa Numismatic Publisher. We all attended the WMF last year with great success and are excited to be returning.

The annual World Money Fair is without a doubt the best combination trade fair and retail show that numismatics has to offer. Their Media Forum clues you in to the full array of new issue coins planned for that years release, their coin dealer bourse offers a wide selection of modern issues to classic coins, plus books, medals and fantasy issues, their associated auctions - this year by Fritz Rudolf Kunker, offer classic rarities and their Mint and Mint supply booths are fabulous and extensive.

If you can be in Berlin the first week in February, please stop by our F + W Media - Krause Publications booth for a chat, or catch me on the bourse floor for a quick visit.

COTY Peoples Choice Award Goes to Hungary
Posted by Tom

TM-NEWS.gifHungary Wins Again!

TMkplogo.gifWorld Coin News and NumisMaster announced today that a Hungarian coin won the newly established Coin of the Year - Peoples Choice Award for the second year in a row. Last year, the first year a COTY Peoples Choice Award was presented, Hungary stunned the Mint and 798 Hungary rev.jpg798 Hungary obv.jpgCentral Bank community by getting out the collector vote for their coin.

In Berlin last year, at the World Money Fair, I was asked by several Mint Directors how Hungary had done so well, so I asked Terez Horvathne, Commercial Director for the Hungarian Mint and was told that they had worked with the countries numismatic clubs and encouraged all members to vote. A straight forward get out the vote effort, combined with a good patriotic national theme for the coin - the 1956 Revolution - brought votes from populace outside the mainstream collecting community also. 1956 Rev.jpg

I relayed this information to all the folks that commented on the voting results and encouraged each and every one to attempt similar drives their own nominees, but happily for Hungary they were able to beat the competition again.

Quite an honor to recive this popular award in it's first two years of existance! My congratuations go out to the Hungarian Mint both for a beautiful coin and for a great job exciting their collecting community!

Demise of the Standard Catalog?
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifParticipate in Your Hobby!

I was reading today about the demise of the Standard Catalog of World Coins. The comments came from Bob Reis, who runs a coin business under the name Anything Anywhere.

It's good to read whatever you can about your field of endeavor. Keep informed, view perspectives, that's how you continue learning, but always absorb these comments with a bit of perspective. One thing I learned years ago was that everyone has an angle, a personal interest and every comment they pass you must be viewed within that context. It's not a good thing, or a bad thing, just something to know and keep in mind when considering their perspective.

If you own a certain coin you probably want that coin to go up in value, if you want to buy a coin you probably want that coin to remain low in value until you have a chance to acquire an example. These are factors of human nature and an analyst must expect them and take them into account. I can't tell you the number of times I have heard from people, out of the blue, after years of no communication, just before they sell a collection. Everyone has an angle. It's to be expected.

Here's a distillation of Bob's recent comments; he is dissatisfied with the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Bob's opinion is that the new 17th Century SCWC was not much improved over the last edition, Bob noticed few price changes to this new edition. Bob thinks that Krause catalogs are not destined to be a part of the future of numismatics. Bob would like to establish an online coin catalog.

That's Bob's perspective. Here's my perspective. There were a huge Z2409.jpgnumber of price changes made to most all European and many Asian listings in the new 17th Century edition of the SCWC. We made those changes with the advice of some of the best dealers, collectors, auction houses and researchers in numismatics and you can view their names on our Acknowledgments page. We are proud of their contributions and happy for their participation. Their hard work makes these catalogs possible.

While I think it is admirable that Bob would like to establish his own online catalog, I must point out that KP already built and launched an online Standard Catalog of World Coins some time ago under the name NumisMaster. It's up and running, it's available to anyone at anytime. Check it out at www.numismaster.com You can view extensive coin data for free, and view coin values for a moderate fee. On NumisMaster you can link to other coin sites, coin sales sites, mints and to coin trading networks. You can use collection software, read articles, offer images and make suggestions for data changes.

I have been the numismatic market analyst for the Standard Catalog of World Coins series for over 20 years. That's more than half of the years in the life of this series. KP has published some great books in that time and I have helped in their production. With all that under my belt, I must say that the most important accomplishment I have made for my hobby has been to assist in the creation of NumisMaster.

I disagree with most of Bob's comments, but I must admit that we agree about one thing; an online catalog is essential to the health and advancement of our shared hobby. NumisMaster is there waiting for you. Use it, enjoy it, participate in your hobby!

1801-1900 Standard Catalog Update
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifStandard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900

The first phase of work towards next years updating of the 1801-1900 Standard Catalog of World Coins 6th edition is under way. What is the first phase you might ask? My friend and coworker Deb McCue runs a vast selection of printouts from a request sheet I spill out of our contributor files. My friend and coworker Sharon Rustad runs mailing labels. Then I pack each contributors printouts, afix their mailing label and ship out all the packages going to U.S. addresses. For addresses outside the U.S., Deb fills out a customs form and then they too get shipped out.

We are almost finished sending out all these printouts, so all of our loyal contributors should be receiving their packages by the end of the year. If you were expecting to contribute to the 6th edition of the 1801-1900 SCWC and have not received your country printouts by the first week in January 2009, please drop me an email.

I think we must have shipped out about 200 packs of printouts over the last six weeks! It's a big job to get this large project rolling, but doing it early helps contributors to have enough time to complete all the adjustments and updates in time for our book production period, which begins in May, 2009. The first two weeks in May is our dealine for the 6th edition. All materials for updating must be in my hands by, or before, May 15th.

Some of our contributors have been using the suggestion system on NumisMaster to send in updates, images and additional data. This has been working pretty well and I hope we can expand the online input capabilities at some point in the future. Until then however, we will have to keep printing and shipping, a tedious task, but one which helps to keep the SCWC series a vital part of our shared hobby.

TMkplogo.gifEarly Paper Money of America - Also Available

Z0101.jpgThe 5th edition of The Early Paper Money of America book, by Eric Newman is now in stock and available through our KP Bookstore online. You should also be able to find this new edition of the old classic at most, if not all, numismatic book dealers.

The new edition offers some excellent improvements, including many color images, countless text revisions, updated and expanded note values from Stuart Levine encompassing the highest grades currently available and more. This nearly 500 page hardcover is essential to any numismatic library for it's comprehensive coverage of American Colonial Paper Money. The cover price is $95.00 and it's worth every penny.

Kudo's really need to be extended to all the folks involved in bringing this 5th edition to market. It was a massive task that carried on for several years and we have these people to thank for it's completion:

Eric P. Newman - for his enthusiasm and expansive research and updates

Stuart Levine - for his vast and highly accurate updating of market values

Kara Grundman - for her outstanding efforts at designing a comfortably flowing reference work

George Cuhaj - for his expert assistance in acquiring and processing color images

and last, but not least,

Randy Thern - for his dedication and perseverance in guiding this book project through several years of internal company changes

Thanks for bringing a great new edition of this classic reference work back to the Early American market!

Colin Bruce Has Left The Building
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifColin Bruce Wraps Up 34+ Years At KP

In 1974 Clifford Mishler brought Colin Bruce II out to Iola, WI to work on the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Colin stayed with it, expanding the series, additing in data and images, proofing, editing and lending his expertise for over 34 years. His last day with the company was this past Friday, October 31, 2008.

Randy Thern, who spent over 20 years with KP in the numismatic advertising and catalog divisions, also left the company this past Friday, October 31, 2008. Many of our contributors knew Randy from email correspondence, as well as from his annual visits to the Michigan State show and the New York Internation Numismatic Convention.

Both Coiln and Randy will certainly be missed here in our offices, but the rest of us will troop on. It will be up to us and our contributors to make sure the Standard Catalogs continue to thrive and provide our shared hobby with a central exchange for up to date information.

Over my years here, many good people have come and gone through the KP Numismatic cataloging department. I fondly remember my days with Marian Moe, Joan Melum, Fred Borgmann, Bob Wilhite, Sally Olsen, Sherry Dopp, Kathy Hines, Ethel Thulien, Joel Edler, Elizabeth Burgert and now Randy Thern and Colin Bruce.

I thank them all for their parts in building the catalog that we have all worked on for so long. Thank you for a good job, one and all.

20th & 21st Century SCWC Printout Mailings
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifContibutor Printouts Hit the Postal System

Even though I am still involved in the last weeks of final production on the soon-to-be-sent-to-the-printer 4th edition 17th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins, the last couple of weeks I have been working on the start of next years 20th and 21st Century SCWC.

When preparing for a new edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins the first thing we do is determine what printouts will be needed for our contributors. I do this with the help of our contributor data files, so if you are a contributor and you have not contacted me with any changes of address or interest, we will be sending you pretty much the same countries to update as you got last year. Once I have a list ready, our database specialist, Deb McCue starts running the needed country files. Once they are all complete, Deb prints out multiple copies of each needed country. That takes a plenty of time and a lot of paper. Deb used up several cases of printer paper this year!

While Deb is doing that, I write a cover letter, laying out the deadlines and instructions. I order envelopes, get labels run and get the letter printed.

After the printouts are run and filed alphabetically we set out pulling what each contributor needs, stuffing envelopes, labeling and sending them out. That's what I have been doing this last week.

While I have been working on the 20th and 21st Century Coin Catalog mailing, George Cuhaj has been working on a Modern Paper Money mailing. This year these books are running close together, so if you are a contributor on both, please set aside a little extra time this fall to concentrate on your suggested improvements, changes and price updates.

While most of the updating work done on our catalogs is still completed by hand, a few contributors have been sending in their updates electronically, using NumisMaster or in a few cases, a DVD of the book. I like the immediacy of these electronic contributions. I also like the way they save trees!

If you have an area of world coin specialty and would like to participate in your hobby by keeping the KP catalogs up to date, please drop me a line at tom.michael@fwpubs.com I am always happy to hear from folks who want to share their expertise in numismtics!

Just a few issues back in the Esylum, I was reading a piece about Colonial Paper Money. The article mentioned the vernerable Eric P. Newman's The Early Paper Money of America as a source and that made me wonder if people knew that a new edition of the book would be coming out very soon.

Indeed, the 5th edition of The Early Paper Money of America has finally arrive at our offices here in Iola and will soon be available for sale on our website and through numismatic book dealers.

TMkplogo.gifKP Book Sale Runs Until October 14th

Just a few minutes ago I received an email from the KP Book marketing team letting me know that there will be a 15% discount on all retail book orders placed from now until October 14th. For more information check out the details provided through this link.

2009 North American.jpgRemember, this is for all Krause Publications titles, and keep in mind that we have released several new numismatic catalogs during the 2008 calendar year. This would include the 36th edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000, the 3rd edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Present, the 18th edition North American Coins & Prices, the 14th edition Standard Catalog of World Paper Money 1961-Present, plus two books just released within the last couple weeks, Eric P. 17th Century Revision Work Continues
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif1601-1700 Revisions Continue

Looks like a very busy week ahead for me and my co-workers as we continue our mighty revision of the 1601-1700 coinage for a new 4th edition of the 17th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins. I have been working through this weekend and several of my co-workers have given up their free time over the last few weeks in an effort to complete all the desired changes to our database in time for the new catalog to be available in the market by November of this year.

I have been finding lots of interesting coins as I scan through auctions in search of pertinent information. Some very tough German States issues have been offered here and there over the last eight years.

Pfalz-Simmern.jpg

In the September 5, 2006 UBS Auction 65, I noticed an extremely scarce 60 Kreuzer, or Gulden, of Pfalz-Simmern from 1661. This example realized about $4,600 in VF condition, with a planchet flaw. Someone who knew more than most was willing to pay a very good price to add this scarce example to their collection.

But this is just one example among countless price changes we have been entering over the last few months. With all these dramatic revisions, I am anticipating that this may be one of the best catalogs I have ever had the pleasure of editing.

17th Century Coinage - Auction Houses
Posted by Tom

TMgavel.gif TMkplogo.gif Auction Houses for 1601-1700 Coins

My last posting elicited a question from one of my regular readers regarding availability and sources for purchasing 17th Century Ducats and Thalers. I posted a comment in reply, but thougth this question deserved a full posting all it's own.

Like I said in my last posting, this is why dealer and auction houses should place image ads in our catalogs, especially for the ealier time periods, where one of our books will be used for several years before a new edition emerges.

image02347.jpgMany collectors of modern coins assume that earlier coinage is all very rare, but this is not always the case. There are many minor coins and even several crown sized types which are quite reasonable in price and relatively common in the market. Collecting 17th Century coinage is within the reach of most any coin collector. The key is to know the best sources.

Many coin dealers offer the more common coins of the 1601-1700 period. One of the most friendly and helpful of them is Allen G. Berman. Allen is always willing to talk and he offers excellent coins at reasonable prices. Check out his website and see for yourself or see his regular ads in World Coin News.

For more expensive high end coins of 1601-1700 consider working with M. Louis Teller Numismatic Company. Teller handles some of the finest coins you can acquire. You will always see his ad on the back cover of World Coin News or check out thier website.

01210q00.jpg

Of course, once you have become accustomed to whatever 17th Century area you have chosen to collect, you will want to begin looking at coin auctions. There are many auction houses here in the U.S. which occasionally offer coins from 1601-1700. Some of the best include: Heritage Galleries, Stack's and Ponterio & Associates.

For the most comprehensive collections of European coins from the 17th Century you will want to seek out auction catalogs from several of the main European firms. These auction houses always seem to be at the center of the market for Ducats, Thalers and their multiples:
Fritz Rudolf Kunker GmbH & Co.KG, Gorny & Mosch Giessener Munzhandlung GmbH, Hess-Divo AG, UBS and Munzenhandlung Harald Moller GmbH.

Don't shy away, once you get going, you will find that the 17th Century offers a great deal for the curious coin collector.

Hot Market for 1601-1700 Coinage!
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif High Prices for 1601-1700 Thalers Ducats and Minors

Z2409.jpg

While many of my colleagues enjoy the ANA Show in Baltimore, work continues, here in Iola, on our massive updating of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-1700 4th edition. Everyone on the cataloging staff, plus a few outside helpers, have pitched in and taken a great deal of the data entry work out of my hands, so that I can concentrate on research. I'm lucky to have such a great group of co-workers and contributors! And my luck is turning into your luck each day as I find more auction results and fixed prices to drive the values in this new 4th editon up in line with todays market.

Earlier in the week I took a few minutes from my hectic schedule to write back cover copy for the SCWC 1601-1700 4th edition. While the marketing people may edit or re-write this before the book sees publication, I thought my readers might like a sneak peek at what I said, as it reflects the intensity and scope of our work pretty well. So here it is, for my readers eyes only:

Welcome to one of the most greatly appreciating areas in all the world of numismatics. Picking up this volume of the new 4th edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-1700 shows that you have an interest in coins of quality and your interest is well founded. The retail prices presented in this catalog represent some of the fastest rising values in world coins. Economic factors have conspired this year, driving collector interest and prices for these classic coins right through the roof!

The 4th edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-1700 features

· Fully updated values for all listings

· Heavy changes in value for most European coinage

· Serious value changes for all German States coinage

· Significant value changes for all Gold coinage

· Special auction quotes for many rare coinage types

· Expanded legend descriptions for many types

If you own a 3rd edition of this catalog, set it aside and add this new 4th edition to your daily working reference library. It’s one tool you cannot afford to do without

Now, two additional things for you to keep in mind.

First, the SCWC 1601-1700 4th edition will be a smaller print run book than the 20th or 21st Century SCWC's. This means that they may go out of print more quickly, so, if you dabble in this area of coins, or more importantly, if you are a regular collector or dealer in 1601-1700 material, don't wait too long to get a copy for your reference library.

Second, if you are a coin dealer or represent an auction house which normally offers 1601-1700 coinage, you may seriously want to consider placing an advertisement in this book. The deadline for advertising in the new Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-1700 4th edition is August 20th, so get moving!

If you have advertised with KP before, in our news papers, magazines or catalogs, just give your regular ad rep a call or email. If this is something new for you, stop by our booth at the ANA, or give us a call for more information.

Robbie Cain of our ad staff is out in Baltimore at the ANA starting tomorrow, so stop by the KP booth and talk to her this week if you are at the show too. Otherwise, give her a call at 1-800-573-0333 ext. 13220 or send her an email at robbie.cain@fwpubs.com

We only publish the SCWC 1601-1700 catalog on a five year cycle, so don't miss this opportunity, or you may be waiting until 2013 for another chance to put your companies name and contact information in the hands of serious buyers from around the world.

Z2963-thinpak.jpg

This years 7th edition of the U.S. Coin Digest inlcuded a DVD with searchable pdf files of the entire catalog bound into the back inside cover of the book. Cover price for this book DVD combination was $16.99. But if you really only want the DVD, we now are offering a stand alone DVD product for only $9.95.

DVD of 1901-2000 Standard Catalog of World Coins
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif 1901-2000 Standard Catalog of World Coins DVD

Z2996SCWC1901-2000.jpgSince I began writing this blog I have noticed that many people are searching for a free download of the Standard Catalog of Wolrd Coins. Well, I must tell you that nothing in this world is truely free and any "free" download of the SCWC that you might find is most certainly a pirated older version of the catalog. So what I can say with certainty is, just give it up and pay for the real deal!

There are three main ways you can get the information contained in the Standard Catalog of World Coins.

First - You can go the old fashioned way and buy the book. Now-a-days we include a DVD version of the catalog in each book we revise, so you get a paper copy and an electronic copy in one tidy package.

Second - You can buy a stand alone DVD package of many of out titles for a bit less than the Book/DVD combo.

Third - You can search all data, except pricing information, for free at our website - www.numismaster.com and for a reasonable annual fee you can get the pricing information as well.

Z1833.jpgHere is an example. We recently released the 36th edition of the 1901-2000 Standard Catalog of World Coins. You can buy the Book/DVD combination at our Krause Books website for $60.00. You can buy the stand alone DVD version at our magazine website for $44.95. Or, you can go out to NumisMaster and subscribe to all our data from 1601-Present for $79.95.

There are different benefits and features for each of these options, which line up with the different costs, but in each case you get the catalog in an electronic, searchable version. Nothing this useful is truely free in life, but the current SCWC is readily available in several forms, all with electronic features for use on your home computer or laptop. Pick the one which suits you best, pay for it, use it and enjoy coin collecting!

Silver & Gold Push on Towards New Heights
Posted by Tom

TM-NEWS.gif Gold & Silver Push On

TMkplogo.gifAlthough precious metals have endured a great deal of cautionary commentary of late, weak conditions in the stock market, failure at major mortgage companies, over extension in credit, problems with the banking industry, weakness with the U.S. dollar and corrections in the rise of crude oil have all conspired to keep gold and silver at the forefront of stable liquid investments. With all living costs on the rise and the economy weak beyond belief, gold is one solid concern on a sketchy horizon.

In the early part of this week gold made another run at $1,000 an ounce, but fell short. It rests this morning, after some profit consolidation, at about $975. Silver sits at just about $19.00.

In the coin market the last 12 month have been phenomenal. Prices for classic material have been driven through the roof by a weakened dollar and burgeoning spot prices.

Lately, all of my time is being spent pushing up prices of 17th Century German States, Austrian, French and other central European coinage for our upcoming 4th edition of the 1601-1700 Standard Catalog of World Coins. To view my progress and see just how extensive and critical these updates are, please stop over at www.numismaster.com and register. For about $80.00 a year you can be at the leading edge of all things numismatic. You can see updates, additions and price changes months before the rest of the hobby gets them in the print edition.

You see what's happening, now you can know what's coming.

TMkplogo.gif Standard Catalog with DVD Combo Deal

Oh, oh, here's another deal that Toni and I have cooked up for my readers! It's a pair of package deals combining KP's two most recent releases, both of which now contain DVD versions of the catalog along with the printed books.

Z1833.jpgHere goes - if you order both new Standard Catalog of World Coins books - the 20th Century SCWC covering 1901-2000 and the 21st Century SCWC covering 2001 to Date - together - from the KP book site, using these links and Coupon Code NB38, you'll get $15.00 off the combined cover price of the two books.

That's both catalogs, including the pdf file DVD's for both books, in one package deal for $80.00.

Toni says we can keep this deal running right through the entire month of July, so order before midnight on July 31st and you're all set.

The second special deal is even better, but you'll have to act a bit more quickly. Order the same two books - the 20th Century SCWC covering 1901-2000 and the 21st Century SCWC covering 2001 - Date - togetherZ1834.jpg from the krausebooks site using these links and Coupon Code NNSP1 - before July 14th and you can get the pair for $77.50.

It's Toni's way of telling you not to procrastinate! Order in the first half of July and save $17.50 on these newest volumes of the SCWC series or wait until the second half of the month and still save $15.00 beacuse Toni wants you to be a happy hobbyist, even if you are a procrastinator!

Clearance Price Coin Books at Krause
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif Two Key Books on Clearance at Krause Publications

There are two bargain priced books out on the KP book site at the moment which might be of interest if you are building a broad numismatic library on a tight budget.

NE&R.jpgThe first is a specialty book we produced in 2006 titled Coins of Northern Europe & Russia. This is a handy little catalog printed in the 6"x9" format, good for travel and quick reference. I covers a slew of countries including Russia, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Iceland, Greenland, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, and many others. Time fram is staggered, but the idea was to cover from 1850 or earlier up to present date. Some countries listings go back as far as the 1820's and some of the Pobjoy countries like Isle of Man or Guernsey end at the early 1970's. We tried to stay with clear breaking points which coinsided with currency reforms, government or coinage type changes. Most types are illustrated, but individula dates are not strung out as in the larger Standadr Catalogs. For this handy book we chose to list date5th ed.jpg ranges and select a base array of prices by grade, giving the reader a baseline price guide by type.

At the KP book site this volume is currently less than half cover price at $12.00. A baragin price for such a compact and useful price guide.

The second title worth looking up is the current 19th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins, which has been reduced from $65.00 to $55.00 for the moment. If you do not yet have a copy of this 5th edition covering 1801-1900, why not pick one up this week.

Panama Silver Balboa Sets Rising
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifHigh Silver Spot Requires Raise in Balboa Sets

Yesterday I had a call from Standard Catalog contributor Peter N. Berger in Panama. Peter had gotten his new 36th edition Standard Catalog of World Coins and was searching through the DVD listings for Panama when he noticed that some of the proof set prices seemed too low. With the rise in spot silver, some of the 1 Balboa and 5 Balboa silver proof values had slipped a bit below current melt pulling the set values down with them.

Balboa 1.jpgWe talked a little about the DVD, which Peter found pretty useful, and about how we would correct the 1 & 5 Balboa listings and the sets out on NumisMaster. I explained to Peter that since the catalog becomes a fixed entity once our designer balboa 2.jpgruns the pages, NumisMaster has become an ideal and essential spot to keep current prices updated and available to collectors and dealers alike. Peter had yet to try NumisMaster, but I think after our conversation he will be signing up soon. The new all encompassing $79.95 one year subscription price, covering 1601-Date for all world coinage, is a great price and Peter thought it sounded like a real bargain.

After hanging up the phone I took an hour or so to enter all the updates for the silver 1 & 5 Balboas in Panama and then I updated all the proof and mint set listings to reflect current values. Stop by NumisMaster and check it out. There's always new data, new issues, new values and updates being entered, making NumisMaster a vital tool for world coin collectors.

New 2001-Date Standard Catalog Released
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif 3rd Edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date

It's finally here! This week we got the first sample copies back from the printer of KP books newest numismatic volume, the 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date 3rd edition. This youngest of the SCWC Century volumes is up over 430+ pages now and has quickly become the mainstay of the modern issue coin collector.

Z1834.jpgNew dates on existing types, new circulation coins, brand new commemorative issues and lot's of price changes give this new edition solid value for the enthusiast. I was very pleased with the work we were able to put into this volume, with the market as hot as it is we still managed to get the gold and silver coin values in line, while adding in nearly 50 pages of new coinage. That's about a 12.5% increase in data, plus we continued this years SCWC big bonus of an added DVD of the entire catalog, so you can now have the Standard Catalog available on your home computer or laptop in a digital form for quick searching to augment the traditional paper catalog. That's the 2001-Date SCWC in pdf page format, the DVD catalog that so many people have been clamoring to get, included with every copy of the bound catalog you purchase.

And speaking of purchasing, the2009 3rd edition SCWC 2001-Date should be available from coin dealers and coin supply houses in the not too distant future, or you can order direct from the KP Bookstore right now. In fact, I asked my good friend Toni over in marketing if we could offer a special deal to all you Big Ideas, little world readers and here's what the two of us cooked up.

If you order the new 2009 3rd edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Date (item No. #Z1834) online through the KP Bookstore , on or before midnight June 26th and use the Big Ideas, little world special discount Coupon Code NB28, you will receive a 20% discount off the $35 cover price.

That brings your cost down to $28.00 for this brand new edition! Consider it a big "Thank You" from me and Toni to you!

New SCWC 36th Edition 1901-2000 Now Available
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifStandard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 36th Edition

I have not yet received my desk copy, but the new 36th Edition Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 is now available for purchase through our KP book website. You should also be seeing copies at shows and in stores very soon, if not already, as the distributors are the first to get stocked.

Z1833.jpgThis edition represents a huge effort in price updating, as I had to work on all silver, gold, platinum and palladium issues to bring them up to current market levels. From last years catalog production period to this years, the spot price of gold has risen by about 30%, while silver has climbed about 35%. Platinum went up by over 70% during the year, while palladium rose by over 40%.

When you see a copy of the book, you may notice that I am now listing market level ranges for precious metal spot prices used during book production, which takes many months. This range illustrates how much metals were changing during the 3-5 months it takes us to revise listings for the new edition. This presents a very difficult task, but I think this 36th edition offers a very good set of values, as fellow blogger George Cuhaj and I were able to accomplish some precise metals changes in the final weeks of production to ensure stability at the upper end of our spot ranges.

Another big added feature of the 36th edition is the inclusion of a pdf file DVD of the entire catalog. It's a great way to get the catalog onto your PC screen for quick easy reference, plus you can enlarge images for a closer look at design details. An electronic version of the Standard Catalog of World Coins is something collectors have been waiting a long time for, so if you have a DVD player on your desktop or laptop, pick up the 36th edition and enjoy the enclosed DVD today.

This new edition and it's DVD version should serve the hobby well over the coming year and of course, we have already been working on new updates out on NumisMaster, our live database, which will fold into next years 37th edition SCWC. It's a continual process and we appreciate everyones participation!

Presidential Error Coin at Heritage
Posted by Tom

TMLYL1.gifError Dollar in Heritage Auction

TMkplogo.gifWith the U.S. Mint State Quarter program and again with the Presidential Dollar program there has been a great flurry of activity focused at detecting and capitalizing on error coins. Off metal strikes, missing legends, plain edges and extra corn husks, there are seemingly lots of them out there waiting for collectors to uncover in rolls, bags and pocket change.

rich.jpgSeveral books and websites can help you learn more about error and variety coins. KP published one last year, titled Strike It Rich - Eith Pocket Change by Brian Allen and Ken Potter. I really enjoyed this book and from what I'm told it sold gangbusters, so others must be finding it useful as well. Allen and Potter provided excellent close up images, clear explanations of differences and terms, plus many cross references to 1969S1cDblDieObvDateBrnToned.jpgother books. Web based sources are noted as well for specialty clubs like Combined Organization of Numismatic Error Collectors of America known as CONECA - whose publication is nmaed Errorscope and the National Collectors Association of Die Doubling known as NCADD - whose publication is called The Hubb.

Some error and variety coins have relatively little value, but many are quite expensive. Recently at least one rare 1969S doubled die Linclon cent was found by a collector in a roll of 1969S cents. The coin was full red and graded MS 64 by PCGS the Professional Coin Grading Service, which makes it one of the finest know examples. Check out this great photo of the coin, provided by Ken Potter. An example found and sold in 2007 brought about $85,000 and this latest one brought about $125,000 at auction!

adams plain.jpgSome of the State Quarter errors have sold in the hundreds, as have the edge varieties of the Presidential dollars. In fact, Heritage Auctions has a plain edge John Adams dollar closing in their Sunday night Internet Auction which currently is bid at $425 and has at least four active bidders and five trackers watching the lot.

There is certainly interest in error coins and the opportunity is there for wonderful finds if collectors obtain a bit of knowledge and keep a keen eye out for the unusual.

Nepal Updating
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif Nepal Gets Democracy

In 2001 amid a shocking Royal bloodbath, Nepal gained a new, and what now appears to be their final, King. King Gyanendra and Queen Komal have ruled over a disturbing time in Nepal. The have had continual political unrest, which has escalted greatly since the King's dismissal of the representative government from 2005-2006.

Yesterday Nepal swore in some 600 official lawmakers and within two weeks they expect the King to step down and the 238 year old Shah Dynasty to come to an end as Nepal becomes a Republic.

As life in Nepal changes, so will the form of listings in our coin and banknote catalogs. The political distinction will move from Kingdom under Shah Dynasty to a Republic of the people. The banknotes and coins for daily circulation will surely be redesigned with legends reflecting their new governmental structure and images not of the Royals, but of prominent buildings, floral and fauna. I do hope that heritage and tradition is not left out entirely though. It would be a shame not to see Buddha on Nepalese gold coins!

Speaking of change, I should mention that friend and fellow blogger Colin Bruce has been busy at work this week updating the 17th Century listings for Nepal. Colin is working from an write-up done by long time contributor Klaus Bronny and has supplemented this with current market information obtained through conversations with dealer Steve Album. Much of the work is now complete and can be viewed on NumisMaster, even though the printed and bound 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-1700 will not be available until later this year. Why wait? Check it out at NumisMaster now.

Just as the revsion of our 17th Century Nepal listings went smoothly, I hope this is a time of peaceful rebuilding for the Nepalese people. They have had a terrible few years of revolt and the populace deserves a chance to flourish again.

New Books, New DVD References
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif New Catalogs and DVDs From Krause Publications

Two new KP catalogs arrived back from the printers recently. The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money - Modern Issues - 1961-Present, 14th edition, edited by friend and fellow blogger George Cuhaj hit my desk earlier this week. SCWPM14.jpgIt features fully updated pricing, better quality images, a nice color section, some simplification in arrangement, ie. South Korea is now under "S", and for the first time ever the book includes a full DVD version of this product! Throw this disc in the DVD drive of your computer and you can have the complete contents of this catalog on your screen. The catalog with DVD included runs $55.00 and is currently available at krausebooks.com, while a separate DVD only version will be released June 8th for $44.95.

Also back from the printers this week is the 7th edition of the U.S. Coin Digest. This catalog covers most everything in U.S. Z1831new.jpgcoinage, with chapters on history, manufacture, grading, varieties and errors, Territorial Gold, Hawaii, Philippines and Puerto Rico, and more. This catalog offers color images of most U.S. coin types in a lay flat, hard cover, spiral binding. In addition, this book too includes a DVD of the full contents, which you can run on a PC or Mac which has a DVD drive, using Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 or later version. At a cover price of $16.99 this presents an extremely good value for collectors of U.S. coinage, or those considering entering the hobby at any level. The DVD for U.S. Coin Digest is also available through our magazine division at a price of $9.99. For details check Numismatic News.

15% Discount on KP Numis Books
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif 15% Discount on Numismatic Books through April 30th

Yesterday I got a Krause Publications email update announcing that any KP numismatic book order recieved by April 30th would be eligible for a 15% discount. Not a bad deal, and the KP Book site is easy to navigate, with good descriptions and images of the book covers to help you choose. I know that they also offer sales and clearance prices on books in other areas of collectibles as well, so if you have a cross interest it's worth checking out the site.

In the numismatics area I noticed that they are offering the Coins of Northern Europe and Russia book at half price! And the massive United States Tokens catalog by Russ Rulau is on sale for $35.00, down from about $55. Some good deals, plus a 15% discount on any of those numismatic books which are not already on sale. To get the 15% discount for an online order just use Coupon Code NNWB48.

Stop by the KP book site before April 30th and fill out the gaps in your numismatic library at a 15% discount and while you're there, sign up for email updates, like the one I got, to inform you of future clearance sales, special offers and new releases. It's a good way to stay informed and make the best use of your collecting budget.

Canadian Embassy reception kicks off Berlin trip
Posted by Tom

berlin2.jpg TMkplogo.gifIt’s a lovely morning in Berlin, Germany, as I sit with fellow blogger, Dave Harper, in the atrium breakfast area of the Estrel Hotel. Our traveling group of four, including NumisMaster operatives, Lisa Bellavin and Scott Tappa, arrived in Berlin yesterday and spent the day getting acquainted with the facilities and getting our jet lagged heads back into shape. A good night’s sleep has helped and we are ready to go this morning.

The Krause Publications crew pose for a shot at the Canadian Embassy for a reception thrown by the Royal Canadian Mint in celebration of its 100th anniversary. From left: Dave Harper, Tom Michael, Lisa Bellavin and Scott Tappa.

The Estrel Convention Center was a buzz with construction activity yesterday, with workers sawing sheets and constructing displays for the 16 Mints which are set to attend the show. We stopped by our regular booth and found things well under way, but dealer set-up does not begin until later this afternoon.

Yesterday we spent a lovely evening at the Canadian Embassy at a reception for the Royal Canadian Mint. There were about 100 attendees and we had the pleasure of speaking with several mint directors and marketing directors from around the world. I also found it a refreshing treat to visit with some of the technical businesses who provide service to the mints in their drive to bring us better coinage.

Today we have been invited to visit the Berlin Mint facility, so I best get moving and get some breakfast to fuel the day’s activities. Check in tomorrow and each day this week for more updates from the World Money Fair.

World Money Fair in Berlin

TMkplogo.gifBerlin Hosts World Money Fair

If the wild Wisconsin weather cooperates, tomorrow morning I'll be leaving on my way to the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. The WMF is one of the worlds largest coinshows in terms of Mint represenation.

There will be 16 world mints attending this years WMF, including the official guest of honor, the Mint of the Peoples Republic of China, and each will be presenting some aspects of their scheduled 2008 coinage programs at a media forum during Friday, the first day of the show.

On Saturday, my little band of travels will be presenting the Coin of the Year Awards, a program that Krause Publications has been holding annually for the last 25 years.

This year COTY also added a live interent voting program for a People's Choice Award, the results of which will be announced in Berlin. Online voting turned out to be very popular and there was a high degree of competition between countries, presumably supported by their clubs and national organizations.

TMkplogo.gifUnusual World Coins Goes into a 5th Edition

cabinda.jpg cabinda2.jpg

Seems the odd stuff of numismatics has a permanent home once again, as Unusual World Coins advances into it's 5th edition. Once upon a time I thought we might never see a new edition of UWC, but never-say-never, as annual campaigning and encouragement from friend and fellow blogger George Cuahj and myself finally got this classic essential numismatic guide back onto the KP schedules for a rebirth in 2005 after a long and lamentable absense since 1992.

uwc cover.jpgThe new edition houses a vast array of new fantasy issues, Euro hopefuls, parody coinage and micro-nations. Court Jester blogger Colin Bruce II updated the issues of Bernard von Nothaus and the Liberty Mint, the Lasqueti Island coins, many chinese fantasy issues, Japanese Amulets, Gabriola Island coins, Duchy of Avram issues, new guitar and motorcycle coins from Somalia, much retro coinage, new Euro fantasies, and much more. George Cuhaj listed the David Carr parody and prototype quarters and dollars as well as other David Carr 20A eagle.jpgcoins for Union of North America and the Trade dollar, in addition to entering large amounts of material from prominent contributor and UWC legend, Serge Huard. I tried to do my part by getting all our contributor pricing updates entered, as well as making a few price changes of my own to some older areas like New Caledonia and Papal States and some more modern places like Nord and Dominion of Canada, plus supplying values for some new issues for places like Easter Island, Kurdistan and Cabinda.

The 5th edition of Unusual World Coins won't be perfect, as it serves a continually evolving field of numismatics, but we are sure it will offer new insights into what is out there for you to collect. Pick up a copy from our KP Bookstore or one of the Unrecognized States Numismatic Society sellers on ebay and bring some joy back into your collecting.

Christmas Shopping for the Collector

Christmas Shopping for the Collector

DVD.jpg uscoin.jpg

Given that it's Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping begins big time in just a few days, I thought it would be nice to offer some comments on shopping for the collector.

First off, it is fair to say that most collectors probably would prefer to buy items for their collection themselves. This being said, I suggest you limit your shopping scope to supplemental items, gift certificates and rich.jpgprimary market items that can be precisely describer by your collector. This may sound limiting, but really there are plenty options within this realm that can satisfy your giving urge and your collectors needs.

world.jpgWe'll take the coin collector as an example. All coin collectors need references. Find out what references are already in your collector’s library and which ones they are craving, but have not yet acquired. We produce some of the biggest and most widely used ones here at Krause Publications and we have an easy to use book ordering website where you can see the items of interest and get an idea of their coverage, edition numbers and such. For more esoteric reference books, you may need some help from your collector. Ask for specific descriptions and retail sources from which to purchase the items.

Other items that are used by all coin collectors include, tools for magnification, lighting and proper storage. This equipment can be obtained through supply dealers, many of whom have websites or paper.jpgcatalogs. You can also find some supplies at coin shops. Locate your local coin dealer's shop through the yellow pages and give them a call.

As for buying coins for your collector, proceed with caution. This is an area of personal preference, so it is best to get some ideas from your collector before you spend any money. If there are new, primary market items your collector would like, you may be able to order from a mint, or purchase new items direct from a world or U.S. coin dealer online or in a shop. For older, circulated items, it is always best to buy the highest affordable grade. If the term grade is unfamiliar to you, abandon this track all together, or enlist the aide of your collector.

When in doubt, you can always seek out an appropriate gift certificate. Most any retailer can offer some form of gift certificate, which will allow your collector to enjoy post Christmas buying.

New Standard Catalog 1701-1800 Just Out
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif4th Edition SCWC 1701-1800 Back From Printer

Z0998.jpg

This afternoon we recieved several advance copies of our new 18th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins. Stock should be available for purchase any day now, so stop by our KP Books web sales site and place your order, or pre-order it at Amazon.

This is our 4th edition of the SCWC 1701-1800 and the 3rd edition, produced five years ago back in 2002, has been out of print for some time now. At 1283 pages this new edition has a bit more heft that the last one and the white pages look clean and clear compared to my previous edition, which is all marked up and rough looking now. It will be nice to have a new edition to work with!

I see that the designer ran this book a little tighter by stringing the countries together, rather than starting each country on a new page, so there is less wasted space. It's also worth noting that the images seem very clear and sharp on this light white paper.

If you have any questions, let me know and once you have had a chance to scan through your own new 4th edition SCWC 1701-1800, feel free to comment to this posting.

New Catalogs on the Way & Some Here Today!

KP Update

Easter Island 2007.jpg Easter Island 500.jpg

Most of our editorial work has been completed on the upcoming 4th edition of the Standard catalog of World Coins 18th Century and the 5th edition of Unusual World Coins. Seems like there is never enough time for all the things we want to do, but we do our best to provide a much-improved product with every new edition. Unusual World Coins was substantially expanded, with new issues being added to many sections including a brand new section for the Union of North America and other Daniel Carr coins, Kurdistan.jpgmany additions to the NORFED - Liberty Dollar listings of silver currency coins, new sets of coins for the Easter Islands and Cabinda, plus a new set of issues from Kurdistan among others.

Other books which have recently returned from the printers and are available at the Krause Books website include the 17th edition of North American Coins & Prices, North Am Coins.jpgwhich covers Mexico, Canada and the United States. This edition carries a cover date of 2008 and has a green and yellow graphic of North America with a sharp Hook Neck Eagle coin superimposed over the top. There are one U.S. and one Canadian coin on the cover also, but the Hook Neck dominates in my opinion.

Also newly released just a week or so ago is the 26th edition of the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money, edited by George Cuhaj, with market analysis by Bill Brandimore. If you haven't bought a new edition of this book in while, the time has come, as George has added color images to nearly the entire catalog. US paper.jpgThere are nice sections on Encased Postage Stamps and Postage Stamp Envelopes also, plus a useful rundown of error notes and good listings of Military Payment Certificates. Bill has done an excellent job of revaluing everything as well, especially on the small size currency.

With all of these books through production, I am now moving on to the mammoth task of updating values for the 36th edition of the 20th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins and the 3rd edition of the 21st Century SCWC. This should keep me very busy over the next five or six months as I plow through contributor returns, adjust for the falling dollar, and try to keep pace with sky rocketing precious metals rates. Wish me luck!

Standard Catalog of World Coins Releases DVD
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gifDVD Puts 5 1/2 Inches of Catalog in 1/2 Inch Case

At theANA this year Krause Publications released a special three volume set of the 19th, 20th and 21st Century volumes of the Standard Catalog of World Coins as a three disc DVD set. This caused a good deal of excitement, as one might have expected.

There have been plenty of people asking for the Standard Catalog on Disc over the years, but it was some recent developments regarding database development which finally led us to be able to provide this long awaited product.

DVD.jpg The set features the most recent editions of the three catalogs, each of which was produced within the past eight months or less. The book covers can be seen on the right front of the DVD case shown here. Each disc presents one volume in it's original page format, so it's just like scanning the pages of the catalog, but without the girth of a heavy book in your lap or on your desk.

Total page count is about 3,760 and total images are roughly 82,750. You can enlarge the images pretty well also, as these are direct from our files, without any second generation degrading. Navigation works through Adobe Acrobat, which is the software which reads the discs. You can do country name or key word searches to find the sections you seek.

The cover prices on the three catalogs totals to $150, but the cost of this three disc DVD set is only $100. At the KP booth at the ANA show last week this new disc set was a featured item, being sold for the special show discount price of $80. At that price I saw many smiling faces, so when I got back here to Iola, I started thinking that maybe I could get fellow Blogger and editorial director Debbie Bradley to extend this discount to my readers for a while. I do so like smiling faces! Anyway, just this afternoon she agreed to allow me to offer that same show special price of $80 to all my Blog readers from now until October 1st.

So if you would like a set of Standard Catalogs on DVD, just email me at tom.michael@fwpubs.com and ask for my special ANA show - Blog extension discount of $80 for the three disc set. You'll have to pay shipping, which is $3.95, so the total will be $83.95, but still, what a deal! Consider it my little way of saying "Thank's" for stopping by to read my postings.

ANA Comes to Milwaukee

Begining this weekend and running through the 13th of August a majority of our numismatic hobby will be focusing their attention on the American Numismatic Associationsbig annual summer show. It's a broad event which can offer a great deal in the way of buying and selling opportunites for everyone and for all kinds of material. You can find just about any type of U.S coinage or tokens, along with a wide variety of world coins, tokens and medals. There will be paper money from most any nation, probably some stocks and bonds and other fiscal instruments. Several world mints will be present and most major coin dealers. There will be many coin dealers from outside the U.S., set up at tables or walking the bourse floor. Club meetings, vest pocket dealers, collectors, accumulators, specialists, researchers, and more will all bve gathered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a weeks worth of numismatic fun.

And yes, even publishers will be there. Krause Publications will have a large booth area set up with information on our magazines, newspapers, books and internet products. We will have plenty of staff members there to answer your questions, help with subscriptions, show you our products and walk you through our newest internet product, NumisMaster. I'll be there too, from the 9th to the 11th, so stop by and we'll have a chat, I can sign a book for you, or I can show you how NumisMaster can help you to enjoy a fun hobby even more.

NumisMaster is a live catalog style database. You can use it to search for coins in your collecting area, identify a coin you may already have, value a coin you may have purchased years ago, or to do any other research live on the Internet. The KP database and catalog staff is updating NumisMaster all the time now, right on the Internet, live to the world. This new system makes for wonderful interaction and great market responsiveness, and you can test drive it live at the ANA convention in Milwaukee next week. See you there!

NumisMaster is Live Online
Posted by Tom

TMkplogo.gif

Building the Hobbies Future With NumisMaster

NumisMaster is now a live system . All our new issue entry, descriptive updates, variety listings and of course price changes are going into NumisMaster directly. Our updates are happening live online. I enter a price change and you can see it on NumisMaster, no time delay, no week to synchronize databases, no weeks for information to traverse the mails, no months for book production. It's now a live system and we can work from that point to ensure that new improvements are built into the system to satisfy your needs.

As we embark on phase two we will be looking at better ways for users and editors to maintain good communication. Along these lines, I would encourage all subscribers to use the suggestion system to offer specific new or updated information to the editors. At the moment it is half automated and half manual, so we're all making an extra effort to keep it fluid. In the not too distant future we plan on adding some additional automation to speed the suggestion system up a bit. The two big things to keep in mind are; be Patient and Participate. We want NumisMaster to be a lively knowledge exchange. If you've noticed something that we haven't yet, please let us know. Everyone can be a part of NumisMaster.

On the catalog front we are through the early portions of the 4th edition updates to the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1701-1800. There have been some exciting additions to the German States listings instituted by Doug Nicol, some serious price changes to France brought about by Serge Huard and Wade Hinderling, and lots of major and minor adjustments to many other national listings derived through internet observation and extensive work from our host of expert contributors. We have a few months yet to work on this catalog before it goes out to the printer. Books should be available in the market by early October, barring any problems.

As we work through the 18th Century catalog, we are also beginning our update and expansion of Unusual World Coins. This will be UWC's 5th edition and Colin Bruce, George Cuhaj and I are all adding in new listings, new images and price updates. At the moment we each have other chores taking the lions share of our time, but by the end of July I would hope to be into UWC full tilt.

June brought us a few new catalogs. The 35th edition of The Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 was released several weeks ago, while the 2nd edition of the SCWC 2001-Date just hit my desk June 29th. This 2nd edition grew the title by about 70 pages and included some dazzling work regarding mintages, new issues and pricing from contributors Melvin Kassenoff and Dr. Kerry A Rodgers. Finally we saw the release of an especially timely and useful new title: The Standard Catalog of Modern World Gold Coins 1801-Present. This new edition houses all gold, platinum and palladium coins for the time period and has brought all prices for these coins up to current market levels for the burgeoning precious metals escalation. Heavily illustrated, with 772 pages of listings, this book is a great addition to the line and one, which should help many collectors as well as novices to successfully navigate, profit from and enjoy the current gold coin market.

KP Update

Work is almost finished on the 2nd edition of The Standard Catalog of World Coins 21st Century and the brand new Standard Catalog of Modern World Gold Coins 1st edition. Editorial work has been completed on both books, and they are now in the hands of our fine production and design staffs, who will wrap them up and send them off to the printers within the next three weeks. By early July both books should be available for purchase.

Begining now and running through the summer months the editorial staff will be working on new editions of the 18th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins 4th edition and an expanded 5th edition of the ever popular Unusual World Coins . By the beginning of August we should have all editorial content set for the 18th Century book, while content for Unusual World Coins will be wrapped up by the end of September. If anyone has comments, additions, or suggestions for these two catalogs, just drop me a line!

Snippets of fun stuff

TMgavel.gif Auction Lot of the Week
I’m always looking at auction lots, both on line and in catalogs, so each week I’ll share with you one of the more unusual ones I’ve come across.

TMfamilywork.gifTom’s Inescapable Truths
We’ll attempt to inject a little humor into this Blog with some funny little quips on family and office life.

Price Change of the Week
Values are continually being changed in our database. Each week I’ll cue you in to a single price change of prominent significance.

Tom’s Recommended Film of the Week
I watch a lot of movies, so each week, just for fun, you’ll get to find out which one I thought was the best.

Focus Country
Here I will try to give you a little news you can use. This segment will feature a country, which is on the move price wise, or has some significant news worthy event happening that day or week.

Friday Fix
Each Friday I’ll post the precious metals closes, London fix.

Commemorative Showdown!
With commemortive coinage exploding all over the market, I thought it would be interesting to create ratios of population compared to number of commemorative coin types by country. Over time we'll be able to rank counties by their ratios to see which ones produce the most commeorative coins per capita. Population data will be derived from the CIA website, while commemorative type totals will be compiled from the Standard Catalog of World Coins database for issues from 1901 to present.

Old to New – Book Review
A guide to building a working numismatic library, based on brief reviews of older references and classic auction catalogs, along with reviews of new works and recent auction sales of significance.

KP Update
For those who like to be in the know, I'll give you the inside track on what Standard catalogs and other new coin books are on the horizon from Krause Publications, plus Numismaster updates and news of other web offerings.
