I can really see the benefits of coin collecting as a badge for boy scouts. Definitely develops persistence, patience and develops a drive to achieve a goal.

The Boy Scout merit badge program began in 1911 as a way to introduce scouts to job possibilities, as well as expand life-skills.

In the late 1920s, the Stamp Collecting badge became one of, if not the first hobby related badge. Coin Collecting followed in 1935 as the two hobbys often share events. In the 1980s, the scouting program reviewed the merit badge series, then as now hovering near 120 badge opportunities, and added the Collections badge, to cover all other hobbies, such as baseball cards, marbles, comic books and the like. So as not to expand into more hobby badges.
