Summer Project - 17th Century World Coins! Olmutz updated

With the Standard Catalog of World Coins 20th and 21 Century catalogs back from the printer, as well as our Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Modern Issues and the U.S. Coin Digest, we have been busy working on other projects for fall 2008 release.
However, users of Numismaster will be noticing the changes as we editors progress.
One of these is now evident with Austrian States - Olmutz. Extensive re-organization and additional listings have casued it to be renumbered. (As well as re-priced).
Available on Numismaster, today! (as well as the other changes we make each day as we progress thru the production of the 17th Century book.)

Thanks for your service, David C. Kranz !

This Thursday is David C. Kranz’s last full day of employment here at Krause Publications. I wish him the very best, as I know where ever he goes in the future, he will give that employer the very best – in performance and attitude!
Many readers know him as the current editor of Bank Note Reporter.
Kranz joined the staff at the newspaper side of the Numismatic Division two-months after I did, so I felt a kindred spirit with him, both of us trying to learn the ropes and personalities of a large office routine, and with that turfdoms and egos.
Over the years, the changes David eased into the paper have been transparent to most readers. The subtle things which make the “look” – how the lines of text align with lines of photo captions, how poorly written stories (often mine) get a re-write into presentable English, or how poor photocopies from columnists manage to get a clean look in a finished paper. These things take effort behind the scenes, and David did them seamlessly. More often than not, it was done late into the night or on weekends to make them happen on time.
The company has changed a lot since he started. His titles changed infrequently, moving up the one rank from editorial staff to managing editor - after 8 years, and only finally being named editor after 13 years. It is a lot different than now when some staff members zoom right into an editorship after less than a year.
During his tenure, Bank Note Reporter was recognized by the NLG with several best issue awards, and Kranz received an ANA Presidential Award. Dave took the (infrequent, but deserved) recognitions in stride.

Stack's to hold sales during CICF

For the first time in a number of years, Stacks will hold a sale on April 24th, in Rosemont, Ill, during the Chicago International Coin Fair. Starting at 4 PM at the Doubletree Hotel.
The sale is presented in two catalogs. The first is the collection of Michael S. Tallent, and includes 293 lots of spectacular English hammered gold sovereigns, early silver crowns, pounds and unites, as well as a large grouping of Charles I coinage and civil war issues.
The collection continues with a nice selection of German multiple thalers.
The second part of the sale is presented as the Alicia and Sid Belzberg Collection. It is comprised of 126 lots of historic Polish, Danzig and Russian material, and then is followed by a selection of Ancient and World Coins, Medals and Decorations. Highlights include two Russian family rubles, several five and ten ducat pieces, in addition to a nice group of Polish patterns.

Vatican City update for Standard Catalog of World Coins, and NumisMaster

In the 36th edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins and very soon on NumisMaster the Vatican City listings will have the "Y" catalog number prefixes changed to "KM" catalog number prefixes.
There will be no number changes.

Peoples Republic of China revision for Standard Catalog of World Coins and Numismaster

We have revised the catalog numbers for the Peoples Republic of China.
As users know, for the past 35 editions, the Standard Catalog of World Coins has continued to use "Y" prefexes to the catalog listings.
As many collectors know, we have been lacking listings too.
With a new reference in hand, and additional information we have been able to flush out the listings that were lacking, and have renumbered the Peoples Republic portion to "KM" prefex numbers.
Will will make available very soon, on NumisMaster, a viewable or downloadable cross-reference listing showing old "Y" and the current "KM" numbers. The cross refrence chart will be complete, showing the listings which have previously been lacking, with the number that will be assigned in the data base.
Then, as the year progresses we will be adding the full descriptions into Numismaster, and they will be ready for the 37th edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins.

Unusual World Coins Catalog now available in 5th edition

Unusual World Coins 5th edition now available !
Colin Bruce, Tom Michael and I were busy this summer collecting data, processing images, and actually buying some of this stuff for the new edition of Unusual World Coins. The the dollar and quarter prototypes of Daniel Carr are included, but the Ron Paul issues of the liberty dollar series have been added to the data base since the book went to the printer, so they are not in the book, but are available in the on-line database.
A bunch of new places have been listed, descriptions expanded, and prices updated based on recent auction and price list appearances.
The catalog is a robust 586 pages of listings in the traditional 3 column format, with 36 pages of additional introduction material and ads.
Retail price is $45.00 USD. However, discounts are available from the usual suspects.
The UWC catalog listings are an option on the electronic NumisMaster database, at
www.numismaster.com
and new listings will appear on that platform continually.

ANS Museum Building sold for 23.9 Million !

It is done. The American Numismatic Society has sold their “close to the Financial District” building gifted to them several years ago, and only partially renovated and occupied since that time for $23.9 Million Dollars. This photo is of the William Street facade, which was often hidden under scafolding.
This is the first time that the ANS will have a big bunch of un-restricted cash to play with. May their investment plans go well.
The re-relocation is planed to take place in the second half of 2008.
The new location will be the 11th floor of a 19 story renovation by Trinity Properties at the intersection of Varick, Grand and Canal Streets, “near” SoHo and Tribeca.
It is interesting to note that this location is about 5 blocks away from a propery on Houston Street which was turned down as a location prior to the move to Fulton St.
Formerly known as 75 Varick St., the building is a block away from the Canal Street stations of the 1/9 Subway; 3 blocks for the C/E trains; 7 blocks for the N/R lines; and 9 blocks from the 4-5-6 routes (Hint: change at 42nd street for the 1, seems like old times, when one needed to go to their 155th Street location!).
I was pleased to read the Executive directors’ comments that the Harry Bass Jr. Library, and the John J. Ford Jr. areas will be modernized. That at least says to me there will be not be a major fundraising drive for new naming areas and offices for this newer location. Also of note is that conference and meeting room facilities will be "state of the art" which will be a huge improvement of the old first floor banking room currently being used for public meetings.
It seems like the best of timing that Frank Campbell has announced his retirement to occur before he has to deal with another move! I wish Frank the very best!

Ten years on...Some thoughts on the past and future Royals

Well, today is the 10th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana.
Her sons Prince William and Prince Harry developed two distinct memorials this summer. First was the very public rock concert on her birthday, and today a splendid service of Thanksgiving. Diana has been commemorated on plenty of postage stamps which make use of the extensive photographic library available. Coinage memorials need to be sculptural, and thus usually require good artistic imput. We have 257 different types listed in the Standard Catalog of World Coins, between the 20th and 21st Century editions. It was easy to do a design/type search using the on-line version of the catalog, called Numismaster.
Some of those commemorative coins have been successful and dignified. The official 5 pound coin of Great Britain is at right. It is a Royal Mint product and depicts her in the often-seen "Shy Di" pose with a modest, ever-so-slight downward glance. Some postraits have been just unidentifiable, and one is glad that her name is part of the legend as an aid to identify the portrait. The Liberia 5 dollar coin is below. It is a Pobjoy Mint Product, and a sad example of poor sculptural work.
She appears on at least one "fantasy" 5 pound bank note producted some years ago. There are no official government issue commemorative bank notes, and I do not know of any other formal intaglio portrait engravings. Not even on postage stamps, as the trend is to have photos used for that medium. Intaglio engraving is expensive and has gone out of fashion on stamp production. 
However, the thought I came away with after watching the memorial service today is how tall and handsome the two young princes are, and that one day, we will have engraved bank notes with a nice formal portrait of King William, perhaps in the robes of the Garter, or the robes of state, as we had with King George V on the notes of Canada, or in a sharp business suit, as we had with King George VI, in Malta and Canada among others.

Standard Catalog of World Coins goes DVD, a guest blogger

DVD Puts 5 1/2 Inches of Catalog in 1/2 Inch Case
George is duplicating Tom Michael's blog from last Friday. Great news.
At theANA this year Krause Publications released a special three volume set of the 19th, 20th and 21st Century volumes of the Standard Catalog of World Coins as a three disc DVD set. This caused a good deal of excitement, as one might have expected.
There have been plenty of people asking for the Standard Catalog on Disc over the years, but it was some recent developments regarding database development which finally led us to be able to provide this long awaited product.
 The set features the most recent editions of the three catalogs, each of which was produced within the past eight months or less. The book covers can be seen on the right front of the DVD case shown here. Each disc presents one volume in it's original page format, so it's just like scanning the pages of the catalog, but without the girth of a heavy book in your lap or on your desk.
Total page count is about 3,760 and total images are roughly 82,750. You can enlarge the images pretty well also, as these are direct from our files, without any second generation degrading. Navigation works through Adobe Acrobat, which is the software which reads the discs. You can do country name or key word searches to find the sections you seek.
The cover prices on the three catalogs totals to $150, but the cost of this three disc DVD set is only $100. At the KP booth at the ANA show last week this new disc set was a featured item, being sold for the special show discount price of $80. At that price I saw many smiling faces, so when I got back here to Iola, I started thinking that maybe I could get fellow Blogger and editorial director Debbie Bradley to extend this discount to my readers for a while. I do so like smiling faces! Anyway, just this afternoon she agreed to allow me to offer that same show special price of $80 to all my Blog readers from now until October 1st.

George Washington Dollars - Which one?

Since mid-February we have had the opportunity to use our third incarnation of a circulating small size dollar coin since 1978.
The three standard problems with the Susan B. Anthony were the similar color and reeding to the quarter, and the continued distribution of the paper dollar. The 1999 Sacagewa fixed the color and reeding part with its golden tone and smooth edge, but the distribution of the paper dollar continued. Now we will be faced with issues of four presidents a year, plus a continued minting of the Sacagewa for the next twelve years. But wait, why are there no dollar coins in our pocket, because we are still using the familiar paper money.
So, what will make the success of the dollar coin a reality is the withdrawal of the paper dollar, the re-introduction of the $2.00 bill as the low denomination workhorse of America’s currency system, and extended use of the five dollar bill.
No, you are not going to be carrying around ten “heavy” one dollar coins, you’ll be carrying around just one or two, and having a stock of $2 and $5s paper in your wallet.
Get used to it.
