Will you buy John Adams dollars?
Posted by Dave

Tomorrow the John Adams dollar will be introduced. The U.S. Mint will begin selling bags and rolls of them on its Web site. Will you be a buyer?

Not too many people will be as far as I can tell. All the novelty, fanfare and hoopla was spent on the introduction of the George Washington dollar in February. What will be left for Adams?

The Washington coins even enjoyed the publicity of the discovery of a significant and very collectible error, the plain edge variety, where the date, mintmarks, “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum” are missing. It is a wonderful error because you don’t need industrial scale magnifiers to see it.

What will Adams offer? I wrote a “Class of ’63” column in the May 8 Numismatic News where I took a poke at  Adams. I wasn’t exactly overwhelmed with responses. That is probably the biggest indicator of the level of collector interest in an Adams dollar.

Sure, Brad Karoleff told me at the St. Louis Central States convention that he liked Adams and I should read a biography of our second President that he recommended. I respect Brad and his opinions. I probably will end up reading the book. But, he is the only one so far to speak up in defense of Adams.

Not that the other side is well represented. I have received one or two e-mails and that’s it. That’s probably it for Adams, too. I could be wrong. When sales open for the Adams dollar tomorrow, we will see.

Hi Dave,
There were several of the State Quarters that I didn't like but I still collected the ENTIRE offering. I think if you get one of the Presidential Dollars you will probably wind up getting them all won't you? Of course I'm just a novice here but I plan on getting ALL of the Presidential Dollars. All the best. JC

I went to a local bank this morning at about 9:30 to ask for some Adams Dollars, at the drive thru I seen a unopen box on the counter that said $1000 do not open until 5/17/2007 I asked for 4 rolls, the teller said she has to ask if I can have that many, she came back and said O.K. so I put $100 in the drawer and she gave me my 4 rolls. 2 for me, 1 to open and 1 to save and 1 each for friends.

Yes, I will buy Adams dollars. I will get them at face value, at my bank, and use them for bus fare, coffee money, and tips for my favorite waiter. He said he loves new coins, such as the President dollars and Statehood quarters. Your friend Brad K probably read the same bio of John Adams as I did...it was a best-seller, and highly recommended...Ginger Rapsus

Just like Ginger, I'll be buying the Adams dollars at the bank in rolls and using them as walking around money.

I will be collecting Adams Dollars, Same as washington.
Also I took offense to the Adams bashing and hadn't responded yet for lack of time. I hope you do your research on Jefferson so you can bash him as well, as I think he is more deserving of it.
